An aneurysm is the ballooning of a weak spot of a blood vessel. The danger of not diagnosing it, is that like an over inflated balloon, it can burst. When an aneurysm bursts, a patient can experience severe and possibly fatal internal bleeding.
Brain Aneurysms
A weak bulging spot on the wall of a brain artery. According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, symptoms of an unruptured brain aneurysm are:
- Cranial Nerve Palsy
- Dilated Pupils
- Double Vision
- Pain above and behind eye
- Localized headache
Approximately 40% of the people who suffer a ruptured brain aneurysm (subarachnoid hemorrhage), show warning signs preceding the rupture. These include:
- Localized headache
- Nausea & Vomiting
- Stiff Neck
- Blurred Vision
- Sensitivity to Light (photophobia)
- Loss of sensation
When a brain aneurysm is suspected, whether unruptured or ruptured, the condition can be observed with CT scans (Computed Tomography), CTA (Computed Tomographic Angiography), MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), MRA (Magnetic Resonance Angiography) and Angiograms (Arteriograms).
A ruptured and bleeding brain aneurysm can be successfully treated. When it is not, a ruptured brain aneurysm can cause brain damage, paralysis, coma or death. Again, timely and astute diagnosis and proper treatment are essential in order to avoid tragic consequences and allow for a good recovery.
Aortic Dissection
An aortic dissection is also known as a dissecting aneurysm. An aortic dissection is when a tear develops in the inner layer of the aorta. The aorta is the largest artery in the body and carries oxygen rich blood away from the heart to most other arteries in the body. When the tear of the inner layer of the aorta develops, blood enters the middle layer of the aorta, causing the middle and inner layers to dissect or separate. If there is a rupture through to the outside layer of the aortic wall, the condition will usually be fatal.
According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms include:
- Sudden, severe chest or upper back pain – often described as a tearing, ripping or shearing sensation – that radiates down the back
- Loss of consciousness (fainting)
- Shortness of breath
- Weakness
Early detection and treatment greatly improves a patient’s chances of survival. Accordingly, doctors can be liable for medical malpractice when they fail to diagnose aneurysms or aortic dissections.
