Miami Attorneys for Cancer from Zantac
Helping Victims of Cancer from Zantac Throughout the State of Florida
In April, 2020, after seven months of investigation, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked companies to stop selling all forms of the popular heartburn drug ranitidine (commonly known as Zantac) because it contains a probable human carcinogen called Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). Significant exposure to NDMA has actually been linked to various primary cancers, including stomach, small intestine, colorectal, esophageal and liver cancer.
Thankfully, the FDA’s action may prevent future heartburn sufferers from developing cancer from the drug. However, there are still thousands of victims who have taken Zantac regularly and are now suffering from its effects. In addition, since drug companies continued manufacturing and distributing Zantac even after evidence of the cancer-causing contaminant emerged, and innocent heartburn sufferers continued taking the medication already in their possession, additional cases of cancer linked to Zantac could develop in the future.
If you or a family member has been diagnosed with cancer that you believe is linked to taking Zantac, you may be able to hold the negligent parties responsible with a Zantac cancer lawsuit. The experienced pharmaceutical product defect attorneys of Boyers Law provide powerful representation to individuals who have been injured and suffered due to the negligence of others and are committed to helping you get justice as well as the compensation you deserve.
Cancer and Other Complications from NDMA in Zantac
Both the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the U.S. National Toxicology Program list NDMA as a compound that probably causes cancer in humans, and under the federal Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act of 1986, it is classified as extremely hazardous. As a known carcinogen, it is actually used in cancer research labs to induce cancer in rats.
Certainly, NDMA is not used in the manufacturing of Zantac. However, the ranitidine molecule of which the drug is composed is unstable, appearing to degrade under certain conditions and in the digestive tract forms NDMA. Prolonged exposure to the NDMA compound has, unfortunately, been linked to various primary cancers, including esophageal cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer and liver cancer, as well as being possibly linked to prostate cancer, leukemia and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
In addition to cancer, NDMA has also been known to cause liver damage and reduced function of the liver, kidneys and lungs. Other complications associated with Zantac usage include arrhythmia or tachycardia, low platelet levels, increased risk of pneumonia, nervous system disorder, skin rashes and hair loss.
